The Unis-Cité non-profit organisation, a pioneer of voluntary community service in France, offers young people aged 18-25, irrespective of educational level, the chance to commit for 6-9 months to carrying out work benefitting the local community. Since 2010, the Bouygues Immobilier Corporate Foundation has partnered one of Unis-Cité’s major projects called Médiaterre. This initiative aims to provide 6-9 months’ training to families from deprived areas on basic eco-gestures, such as not leaving electrical equipment on standby, using low-energy light bulbs and not leaving water running unnecessarily. In 2012, 226 young people helped 721 families in the areas supported by the Bouygues Immobilier Corporate Foundation. They enabled families to save up to €200 per year on their water and electricity bills. In 2013-2014, Unis-Cité will recruit 2,000 new volunteers.
