Cities are currently facing new demographical (70% of the world’s population will live in cities by 2050), environmental (scarce resources, global warming, etc.), economic and social challenges.
In order to meet these challenges, local authorities are increasingly committing themselves to building a new more sustainable model of city, which is what French people desire, as shown by the results of a survey entitled “Les mots de la ville de demain” carried out by Institut Médiascopie and commissioned by Bouygues Immobilier. Those polled were asked what they believed the city of tomorrow should be and they answered that:
- it should be connected with its region;
- it should have a mixture of functions, and urban, generational and social forms;
- it should be economical by promoting water and waste recycling, energy efficiency and energy production with a view to creating positive-energy neighbourhoods;
- it should be smart by using new technologies in order to promote “a better life”.
