As the COP21 climate conference approaches, Hikari gives a foretaste of the solutions that will transform tomorrow’s cities

Located in the heart of Greater Lyon, Hikari is the first positive-energy mixed-use development in France. The scale of the development and the sheer extent of innovation make Hikari one of the largest demonstration projects in Europe.
The outcome of an exemplary public--‐private partnership involving the Greater Lyon urban authority, NEDO, Bouygues Immobilier/SCL Pitance, Toshiba and many other French and Japanese partners, Lyon Smart Community addresses all the issues of energy efficiency, multimodal transport, the role of the user and the associated management tools. It includes the construction of Hikari, a cluster of positive-energy buildings, the rollout of a fleet of shared electric vehicles, the installation of energy monitoring systems in residential properties and the implementation of a system to analyse energy consumption data throughout the project.
A 12,800-m² complex of three mixed-use buildings containing offices, shops and apartments, Hikari, which means “light” in Japanese, is designed by the internationally renowned Japanese architect Kengo Kuma. His special affinity with transparency and light is reflected in a highly contemporary approach to architectural design inspired by nature.
Packed with innovative technologies related to renewable energy sources, Hikari over a full year will produce more energy than it consumes. This goal is achieved through three main factors:
- bioclimatic architectural design, incorporating optimum use of daylight and appropriate materials;
- energy production on-site: a colza-oil cogeneration plant and a photovoltaic power plant produce a total of 476 MWh of power per year (1523 MWh of primary energy with the coefficients imposed by the planning authority). Equivalent to the consumption of around 160 households, this will cover 80% of the development’s power needs and 90% of its heating needs. Photovoltaic panels to transform solar energy, a geothermal system and an absorption pump for the office cooling system complete the energy facilities;
- pooled energy resources and data analysis: energy-efficient buildings coupled with a Building Energy Management System (BEMS) in the offices and a Home Energy Management System (HEMS) in the residential properties ensure that heating and cooling are kept to a minimum, in synergy with the optimized use of any excess energy produced by means of techniques such as cogeneration, energy storage and energy recovery.
